Commencement Speaker Oprah Winfrey Shares Words of Wisdom with Spelman College Class of 2012
Global media mogul and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey delivered the commencement address to the Spelman College class of 2012 on Sunday, May 20. The Mississippi native, who received an honorary degree from Spelman College in 1993, was also recognized with the National Community Service Award. Honorary degrees were bestowed upon public health advocate Dazon Dixon Diallo, C’86, founder and president of SisterLove Inc., one of the first HIV/AIDS non-profit organizations in the Southeast founded by a woman and devoted to women; and highly-acclaimed actress, playwright and professor Anna Deavere Smith.

D Benson Benson Soars at Spelman
As Deaweh Benson, C'2012, reflects upon her experience at Spelman, she will have a difficult time pinpointing the singular experience that led to her success. With a 3.99 GPA, the psychology major, English minor and Phi Beta Kappa inductee has been afforded numerous academic and leadership opportunities. She will serve as a management trainee with McMaster-Carr Supply Company after graduation, and plans to pursue a doctorate in strategic management. The Washington, D.C., native would like to utilize her skills to advance minority business development.

Salutatorian's Spelman Journey Takes
Her Around the World and Back
Making her mark with a 3.97 GPA, Alexia Williams' Spelman journey has been filled with enriching experiences. In addition to studying abroad in Lima, Peru, and Malaga, Spain, Williams has studied Afro-Peruvian folklore and slave identities as a UNCF Mellon Mays Undergraduate Research Fellow, and conducted research at Princeton University in Afro-Peruvian poetry and performances as forms of peaceful protest. The English and Spanish double major plans to tutor inner city seventh-and eighth-grade boys in English and Spanish at the West End Boys School, a boarding school in Louisville, Ky., before pursuing a doctorate degree in comparative literature.

For the Love of Apps: Spelman Women Share Their Favorites
College students are using apps on their phones to do everything from getting an edge in their academic lives to staying engaged with social media. Not only are they using this technology, but Spelman students are also creating apps, like the award-winning HBCU Buddy, created by Jazmine Miller, C’2011, and Jonecia Keels, C’2011, when they were undergrads. High School students will also be taught how to develop mobile apps from June 18-22, at Spelman's Imagine Computer & Information Science summer camp directed by Jakita Thomas, Ph.D., assistant professor of computer and information sciences.

Student Spotlight

Dual-degree computer science and computer engineering major Tyler Davis, C'2013, recently received a $10,000 Google-UNCF scholarship, an award given annually to African-American undergraduate and graduate students. In addition to the scholarship, Davis has been invited to attend the Annual Google Scholars’ Retreat in Mountain View, Calif. She serves as team leader and co-captain of the College's robotics team, and recently led the team at the National Science Foundation's Second Annual USA Science & Engineering Festival in Washington, D.C. Having already completed internships at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and the Oracle Corporation, Davis will intern at the Boeing Company this summer. Tyler’s life mission is to increase the confidence of minority students, especially girls, in order for them to excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
