Welcome to the Department of Student Health Services, located in historic MacVicar Hall. We hope you will take full advantage of the services we offer. We want to help you stay physically and mentally strong.
Registered Nurse available to students by phone or walk-ins to answer medical questions or women’s health questions.
Laboratory tests performed as ordered by medical provider. Staffed by a lab technician certified to perform venipunctures, EKGs and other lab tests as requested.
Cold Self-Care Station
Students evaluate their cold symptoms with a self-assessment form. If students answer no to all questions, they can receive a “Cold Pack Starter Kit” which contains over-the-counter medications to treat their symptoms.
Physician Specialists available to students upon referral by Student Health Services medical providers for any medical condition.
X-Ray, EKG, Ultrasound are just a few of the diagnostic tests which can be ordered through Student Health Services.
Inoculation against the latest Influenza virus offered to students at no charge and to faculty and staff for a nominal fee. Watch for flyer and announcements about the campaign.
Health information and education is provided to individuals as well as entire classes and organizations by the many qualified staff of the Student Health Services Department or by the peer education group.
Immunization services offered to first year students and international students who are unable to complete immunization requirements in their home states or countries. Immunizations offered include Meningitis vaccine, Varicella vaccine for chicken pox disease, MMR II, Tetanus, Hepatitis B, and Polio. PPD screening for Tuberculosis available as well.
Breathing treatments for asthma as well as education about triggers of asthma related conditions.
Provided by a Registered Dietician to help students with diet related issues, including weight gain, weight loss, vegetarian diets or prescribed diets ordered by medical provider. Services by appointment only.
Primary Medical Clinic
Comprehensive medical services offered to students for urgent, acute and chronic conditions. Students can receive unlimited office visits with the nurse practitioner. Non-urgent patients who "walk-in" will be evaluated and may be given an appointment to return at a later time. Emergencies and urgent cases will be seen immediately. Referrals to outside facilities, providers, and clinics are available when ordered by the nurse practitioner, physician or requested by the patient.
Sick Call Clinic
Functions within the primary clinic. Affords students who are sick, ill or injured to be seen on a walk-in basis.
Women’s Health Clinic
Comprehensive gynecological services including pap smears, breast exams, pregnancy testing as well as contraceptive supplies. Services offered by appointment only. An appointment is required to receive a physical exam or family planning services at the Women's Health Clinic. If you have a morning appointment, please complete medical forms the previous day, otherwise please arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment to complete medical forms. Please NOTE: If you have not completed the forms prior to your scheduled appointment, your visit will be rescheduled.
Physical Exams include: Pelvic Exam, Pap Smear, Breast Exam, Lab Work, Pregnancy Testing and Referral, Evaluation and Treatment of STDs and other Infections. If you’ve had a pap smear within the year from your regular doctor, we can help you obtain those records to begin receiving contraceptive supplies from the Women’s Health Clinic. Future exams should be scheduled through the department for the Women’s Health Clinic.
New service offering Immunization and education to students who are traveling in “Study Abroad” programs. Services offered by appointment only.
Fees - Payment for medical services through the Department of Student Health Services is included in the student’s tuition. Exceptions include laboratory services which will be billed to the student health insurance plan and/or the student’s primary insurance.
Lost birth control pills (after given initial supply) is $5.00 per pack.

Students enrolled must present a current valid Spelman ID before receiving service.
Emergencies: The Department of Health Services is available to handle emergencies during hours of operation. If the injured/ill person can come to the Health Services Department, they should do so. If assistance is needed with transportation to the department, please contact Public Safety at 404-525-6401 .
After hours: The Department of Health Services does not provide after-hours care. For severe injuries/illness, the student should go directly to the emergency room of Atlanta Medical Center or, if you live off campus, to the nearest emergency facility. For less serious injuries and illness, the student should notify their RA, RD on call, and Public Safety and contact the after-hours physician.
