"Protectors of Our Future"

Spelman is a safe and secure community protected by a competent and committed staff of 30, the core of the Department of Public Safety's professional law enforcement, safety, and security team. The Public Safety Department works 24 hours a day patrolling the campus and adjacent streets and manning the emergency communications center, plus handling parking, safety programs, and numerous other duties.

Visit our offices at any time to pick up bus and train schedules, campus and metro phone directories, AUC shuttle schedules, educational booklets, street maps, and directional handouts.

Mission Statement

The motto of the Public Safety Department, "Protectors of Our Future", symbolizes commitment to the preservation of our individual, institutional, and collective futures. Our approach to maintaining the safest environment for our campus is built on the belief that only through constantly nurturing and expanding positive relationships with both internal and external partners can we meet our evolving community safety and security needs.

Law Enforcement

Our Public Safety Department is certified by the State of Georgia as a Police Agency. Personnel with Peace Officer status have the same police authority as City of Atlanta Police on the campus and within 1/4 mile. While the majority of our activities focus on crime prevention, we fully utilize our investigative and arrest powers when violations of criminal law occur within our jurisdiction.

Educational Programs

Adopt A Dorm

This program allows officers to "adopt a dorm" and affords them opportunity to spend approximately 1 1/2 hours weekly in the residence interacting with students to develop positive relationships and to offer a variety of crime prevention and educational services.

POSSE (Protecting Our Spelman Sisters Everyday)

POSSE is a leadership development program that recruits 25 students each academic year to work with the department to promote special activities related to safety, security, and criminal justice career opportunities.

Fight Back

This program allows students to acquire personal protection skills that may be applied at school, home or in the community. We train in fire safety and other safety areas, too.
